Ear Candling – Is it Effective?
Eat candling involves placing a hollow candle in the ear. The candle is then lit and allowed to burn for 15 minutes.
After the procedure, a mixture of ear wax and debris is said to be left in the candle.
It is said to create a vacuum that draws the wax out of the ear along with debris.
However, according to experiments conducted on artificial ear canals, no vacuum were created during candling procedure. Besides, powdered candle was found to be deposited on the artificial ear.
Several adverse effects have been reported with ear candling. Up to 35% of Americans surveyed experienced adverse effects and 20% have had ear injuries treated due to ear candling.
If the procedures are improper, it can cause temporary hearing loss, occlusion of ear canal, ear infection and even tympanic membrane perforation. Ear candling should not be carried out on patients with perforated tympanic membrane or those who have had a recent ear surgery.
