Is DRY SKIN (Xerosis) A Problem?
Ordinarily, dry skin isn’t serious, but it can be uncomfortable and unsightly, creating fine lines and wrinkles. Our Skin is body’s first line of defense against the elements. When sun, wind, and cold leave skin dry and itchy, don’t hide it under long pants and gloves. Replenish it!
To get the kind of smooth, sleek skin you’ll want to show off, learn the causes of, and fixes for, dry skin.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT CLEANSER
Don’t put just any bar of soap into your shower dish – they’re not all the same. Wash with a harsh soap and you’ll send your skin’s natural moisture barrier straight down the drain.
Quick Fix: Go Mild
We strongly recommend using a mild, fragrance-free soap that moisturizes as it cleanses. Choose a soap that’s specially formulated for dry skin, bar or liquid doesn’t matter.
ENJOY THE STEAMY SHOWER?
It feels wonderful to stand in a really hot shower to belt out your favourite tune… but it can dry out the natural oils in our skin more quickly. The longer you linger in the shower, the more you dry out your skin.
Quick Fix: Cleanse Coolly and Quickly
Dial down the shower temperature to lukewarm, and keep showers short. Five minutes is enough to get clean without over-drying. Save the singing for your car.
RUB OUT THE DIRT?
Think you need to scrub your skin to get it clean along with your scrubby sponge? Friction strips the skin and enhances the dryness.
Quick Fix: Go Soft
Use your hands or a soft wash-cloth instead. They’ll get you just as clean as abrasive sponges, without roughing up your skin.
PAMPERED YOUR SKIN
Dry skin condition can simply improved by providing adequate hydration.
Quick Fix: Apply Moisturizers
Moisturizers and emollients work best when they’re applied to skin that is wet or damp. After washing or bathing, pat the skin dry and then apply the moisturizer right away.
You can use different types of emollients or moisturizers at different times of the day. Apply these substances as often as you need to keep your skin soft.
MOISTURIZERS
Moisturizers are full of promises, and often at a high price. But how do they really work?
HOW MOISTURIZERS WORK?
Firstly, they act as a barrier, stopping water loss while preventing external elements from drying out your skin. Secondly, some contain ingredients (such as glycerine) that attract water from the air to moisturize the skin and lock onto water molecules, keeping them on the skin.
Because your skin is a single, complete organ, some experts recommend using moisturizer on your whole body.
Plant oils are the most common type of emollient in all natural moisturizers because of how nourishing they are. Some of the best natural moisturizers contain almond oil, apricot kernel oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, olive oil, rosehip seed oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, and shea and cocoa butter because they are both curative and moisturizing. Synthetic emollients, which are commonly made from petroleum and other synthetic alcohols, work by forming a barrier on the skin to seal in moisture. Because of this, your skin can have trouble breathing which ultimately-causes clogged pores and can irritate your skin.
