7 Plants To Keep Your House Fresh And Pollution-Free

The interior of your home is a reflection of who you are. Most people spend a considerable amount of time and money to create a space that they feel most relaxed in. While furniture, fabrics, and curios can add style to your interiors, nothing compares to a dash of green inside your home.

Having plants as part of your decor quite literally infuses fresh life into your living space. If you’re planning to spruce up your interiors, there are several indoor plants you can choose from. However, some indoor plants go beyond just being objects of beauty and can also help you keep your interiors fresh and cool.

1. Ficus Tree

The ficus tree, also known as the weeping fig, is a great option to add more green to your interiors. Apart from being a visual treat, this plant helps in removing airborne toxins and increasing oxygen levels. To make sure your ficus tree is healthy, place it in a bright spot where there’s enough indirect sunlight.

2. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera has been used since ancient times for its medicinal properties, especially to treat cuts and burns. However, it’s a little-known fact that this healing plant can also help in keeping interior temperatures low, thus making it an ideal summer plant for your interiors. Aloe vera also improves air quality by filtering out formaldehyde from the ambient air. Aloe vera stores water in its leaves in the form of a jelly, so regular watering is not needed.

3. Areca Palm

The areca palm is probably the most well known and widely used indoor plant across the world. It has air-purifying properties which remove carbon dioxide and toxins from the air. It is also an excellent humidifier which is why the areca palm has been consistently rated as one of the top choices to enhance interior environments. If you’re planning to add a few areca palms to your home, make sure to choose palms with a thicker trunk, ideally measuring an inch or more.

4. Golden Pothos

This plant is known by several names such as devil’s ivy, silver vine, or simply money plant. While the plant may not grow money or silver, it can definitely add to your overall health. Golden pothos has been part of NASA’s Clean Air Study. This study found that it can absorb and remove toxins like formaldehyde, benzene, xylene, and toluene from the air. This plant gets the name devil’s ivy because it’s almost impossible to kill, which means it can make do with partial light and little watering.

5. Baby Rubber Plant

The baby rubber plant is another member of the ficus family. This houseplant cleans the air by emitting high levels of oxygen and purifies indoor air by removing toxins such as formaldehyde. Baby rubber plants do not need frequent water, however, make sure it’s planted in rich soil and gets enough filtered light.

6. Boston Fern

This indoor plant brings together style and functionality. The Boston fern is considered to be one of the best air-purifying indoor plants there is. It removes toxins such as formaldehyde and also acts as a natural humidifier. The Boston fern grows best in bright light and damp soil. However, it also can withstand low light and infrequent watering.

7. Snake Plant

Commonly known as mother-in-law’s tongue, the snake plant has a unique property which makes it ideal for your bedroom. Unlike most plants, the snake plants emit oxygen in the night instead of carbon dioxide. About 6-8 waist-high snake plants can produce an oxygen output optimal for one person. The plant is also an excellent toxin remover. A NASA study found that the snake plant absorbs toxins such as benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, xylene, and toluene from the air. It’s a sturdy plant that can tolerate low light levels and irregular watering.

With increasing traffic and pollution, it has become all the more important to come back to a space that helps your refresh and rejuvenate so that you’re ready to conquer the next day. Indoor plants that naturally purify the air and give out oxygen will not only enhance your living space but also give you that much-needed ambiance of tranquility.
